What Small Shopify Stores Should Fix First for Accessibility
Share
Many Shopify store owners are surprised when an accessibility scan returns a long list of issues. The important thing to understand is that not every issue carries the same weight.
For a small business, the goal is not to fix everything at once. The goal is to identify the issues most likely to affect how customers use your store and start there.
Here are four areas small Shopify stores should prioritize first.
1. Images Without Meaningful Alt Text
This is one of the most common accessibility problems on Shopify stores. It is also one of the clearest places to begin. If an image helps a customer understand a product, promotion, or action, it should have meaningful alt text.
2. Buttons and Links That Are Not Clearly Labeled
Unclear labels, icon-only buttons, and vague link text can make navigation difficult for screen reader users and frustrating for anyone trying to move through the site efficiently. On Shopify stores, these issues often show up in menus, cart icons, popups, and app features.
3. Keyboard Navigation Problems
An accessible store must work without a mouse. Users should be able to move through the page with a keyboard, reach important controls, and clearly see where they are on the screen.
4. Problems Introduced by Apps and Customizations
One of the biggest misconceptions in Shopify is that a modern theme solves accessibility on its own. It does not.
Many issues come from the layers added after the theme is installed: apps, sliders, popups, review widgets, custom sections, and promotional features.
That is why accessibility is not something you set once and forget. It has to be checked as the store changes. We covered that more in Why Shopify Themes Alone Don’t Make Your Store Accessible.
